Listen to Obituary

William “Bill” McLaughlin, age 79, passed away peacefully at home in Itasca, IL, on December 9, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on June 1, 1946, in Port Chester, NY, Bill was the son of the late Patrick and Margaret McLaughlin.

Bill married the love of his life, Janis, on May 27, 1972, after first meeting while both were working at the American Can Company in Greenwich, CT, and together they built a life defined by devotion, faith, and deep family connection. He was the proud father of Matthew (Michelle) McLaughlin of Itasca, IL and Kelly (Arnie) Alvarez of Roselle, IL, and the cherished grandfather of Hannah and Ryan Alvarez. Bill also leaves behind his loyal grand-dog and special companion, Cassie, who brought him much laughter and joy.

Bill is also survived by his brothers Denis (Mary Lee) and Eddie (Jean); his sister-in-law Jean (Bill) Cramer; his brother-in-law Kirk (Katie) Whalley; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers Patrick, John (Emelina), his sister Nellie (Frank) Tyburski, and his beloved in-laws Bud and Lois Whalley.

A proud Vietnam veteran of the United States Air Force, Bill lived his life with quiet strength, humility, and a deep sense of service. That spirit of service extended far beyond his military years, shaping the way he cared for others, put their needs ahead of his own, and expressed kindness in countless ways. He was always a champion of the underdog, quick to notice those overlooked and just as quick to lift them up. Even in his final months, he was more concerned about the comfort and well-being of his nurses and caregivers than his own. His generosity came naturally, whether he was offering help before anyone asked or insisting on being a generous tipper as his way of honoring and appreciating others.

After moving to Illinois in 1987, he embraced his new home - trading in his loyalty to the Mets and becoming an enthusiastic Chicago Cubs fan. He found great joy in tending to his lawn and flowers, tracking the weather, enjoying a good jelly doughnut, and celebrating the beauty of each season.

Christmastime held a special place in Bill’s heart. His home glowed with elaborate Christmas villages, Santas, and decorations that delighted family, friends, and coworkers alike. At work, Bill was warmly known as “Mac,” and those who knew him there will forever remember his kindness, humor, and practical jokes. Hosting his annual work Christmas party became a beloved tradition, filled with laughter, warmth, and Bill and Jan’s unmistakable talent as exceptional hosts.

Above all, Bill’s greatest love and unwavering priority was his family. He treasured every moment spent with them - from everyday routines and cheering on his grandchildren to unforgettable trips to Disney World and Hawaii. His Catholic faith guided him, his kindness lifted others, and his love created a legacy that will carry on through all who were blessed to know him.
