Richard Gale Scoles, 81, of Wood Dale, Illinois, passed into eternal rest at Ascension Alexian Brothers- Hospice Residence in Elk Grove Village, after a long battle with cancer, on July 26, 2026. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, and his smile, wit, and presence will be deeply missed.
Richard cherished spending time with family and friends, exploring the natural world, and teaching youth how to be active and healthy; he loved teaching elementary PE at Elmhurst School District 205, coaching volleyball at York High School, guiding outdoor adventures with the College of DuPage, and managing the Itasca Pool for decades. He enjoyed sharing music with friends, conversations around campfires, and colorful sunsets. Born “two hundred years too late,” he appreciated “songs from the wood” and understood “the secret of life is enjoying the passage of time.”
Richard’s death is preceded by his parents Gale and Helen (Kovalek), wife Janet (Johnson), and many dear friends. He is survived by his three children: sons Daniel and Jonathan (Karen) of Roselle, Illinois; daughter Jennifer (John Mital) of Negaunee, Michigan; and five grandchildren Caleb, Thomas, Sawyer, Faith, and Matthew. He was a kind-hearted and fun-loving “Papa Rich” to his grandkids and encouraged them to pursue their talents and interests.
A celebration of Richard’s life will be held on Sunday, October 18th, 2026 from 12-4pm at the Itasca Country Club. In lieu of flowers, consider planting a tree in his honor, or giving a Memorial Gift to either The Lutheran Church of Saint Luke in Itasca, Illinois; Ascension Alexian Brothers- Hospice Residence, or The Nature Conservancy.
