Biography

Larry August Dohrer, 78, passed away on Sunday August 16, 2020 surrounded by family. He was born on September 30, 1941 in rural Garber, Iowa, son of the late Harold and Bernice Dohrer. He was preceded in death by his sister Rita Jane Rieck and nephew MSG Jeffery Rieck. Larry is remembered lovingly by his wife of 56 years Paula (nee Carroll) Dohrer. They were married on November 9, 1963 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Elkader, Iowa. He is survived by his sons Timothy Alan (Stephanie) Dohrer and Thomas Andrew (Tracy) Dohrer, as well as grandchildren Catherine, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Abigail, Lucy, and many beloved nieces, nephews, friends, and colleagues. Larry graduated from Elkader High School in 1959 and attended University of Iowa for two years as an art major before following his dream to become an architect. Larry and Paula moved from Iowa to Chicago in 1963, where Larry worked as a draftsman. In 1972, he became a licensed architect and worked at various firms in the Chicagoland area. Larry started his own architectural and construction firm in 1981 and his work can still be seen in hundreds of commercial, industrial, public, and private buildings in the suburbs around Chicago. Larry held architectural licenses in five states. For the last 27 years, he served as a corporate architect for the Interior Design Group in Lisle, Illinois. Larry was a proud Elk Grove Village resident for 48 years and served as a volunteer and leader of several boards and organizations, including the Elk Grove Village Zoning Board of Appeals, Talbot’s Mill Homeowner Association, Elk Grove Park District Youth Basketball, the American Heart Association, and the Mended Hearts organization at Alexian Brothers Hospital. The immediate family will hold a private Funeral Mass and burial. A Memorial Service is planned for Summer 2021. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made in Larry’s name to the American Heart Association or the Ronald McDonald House Charities.
